Oral History Program

While publishing a three hundred year history of the organized Bar in this state, the South Carolina Bar Foundation quickly discovered that despite the best searches of old Bar publications, newspapers and other records, the events and personalities surrounding some significant occurrences remained half hidden, like icebergs. To ensure accuracy, extensive reviews of biographies, autobiographies and other publications were necessary to present full views of events and to understand their relationships to activities of the organized Bar. That expensive and time consuming research was often successful, but when it was not, it was as if a portion of a melody or painting were left unfinished. In looking for ways to preserve the past for the future, the Foundation explored and settled upon a program of “oral history.”

In recent years, the histories have been captured by a videographer as well as transcribed. If an audio or video is available, the links are noted on each individual's page. If there is no link, the written transcript can be found at the South Caroliniana Library under the South Carolina Bar Foundation Oral History Collection.
