Grant Applications
Due to the continued decline in interest rates, IOLTA
income remains critically low. As such, the South Carolina Bar
Foundation has decided to limit the organizations from which it
would accept grant applications. If you are not a current grantee of
the Bar Foundation, we cannot accept an application from you for the
upcoming grant cycle which runs July 2013 to June 2014.
We regret that we cannot
accept more requests, but the reality is that we are not able to
meet the needs of the current grantee pool. Interest rates are not
projected to rise until 2015. When they do, IOLTA income should also
rise, increasing the funds available for grants in future years. The
Foundation is also looking into other ways to increase revenue
available for grant funding. In the current interest rate
environment, applicants should not expect increases in funding for
FY 2014. Please note that the application has been greatly
revised for this cycle.
Though the 2014 cycle is
closed to new applicants, Foundation is permitted to make
an award to an entity that currently is not funded. In that case,
the applicant would be invited to apply by the Board.
IOLTA
grants may be awarded for three purposes:
(1) to
provide civil legal services to indigents in South Carolina;
(2) to
offer law related education to the public in South Carolina
and
(3) to
improve the administration of justice in South Carolina.
Since
the inception of the IOLTA program, more than $43 million in grant
funding has been provided to promote access to justice throughout
South Carolina. For the period July 2012 through June 2013, the Bar
Foundation awarded $1.89 million in funding for a variety of law
related organizations.
